As organisations digitise, previously separate silos of tools, processes and information across Information Technology (IT) and Operational Technology (OT) are coming together at a rapid rate. This convergence of IT and OT is a pivotal challenge for organisations eager to embrace Industry 4.0, as it is key to unlocking the full potential of technologies like IoT, AI, 5G, mobility and edge computing.

Integration promises unparalleled growth, innovation and operational efficiency, but it also raises complex cybersecurity challenges that can be difficult to address. Telstra commissioned technology research company Omdia to evaluate the state of IT and OT convergence in North Asia, assessing maturity and highlighting the biggest benefits and opportunities.

• 85% of firms expect to see business benefits from IT/OT convergence, including improvements to innovation, reliability, integrity and revenue growth.
• 54% of firms believe digital transformation and adoption of advanced technologies have been the most significant factors accelerating recent IT/OT convergence.
• More than 50% of OT systems will be connected to corporate (IT) networks in the next year, up from 38% today.
